Rothco G.I. Style Aluminum Mess Kit
A simplified version of a standard mess kit, as the GI type does not come with utensils. A fry pan and plate made of durable aluminum is the bare essential required for a soldier to cook quality meals. The difference between a civilian mess kit and a military mess kit is simply the size and compactness. The civilian kits are made to feed up to a family of 8 while the military kits are meant for just one individual or possibly two.
Original G.I. mess kits were made with galvanized steel but the lightweight aluminum proved to be just as efficient at cooking but significantly lighter. These versions are more recommended for bug out type scenarios and extremely minimalist backpacking.
The meaning of the word "mess" is simply "a state of disorganization". This is contrary to what this item provides. It's a simple way to keep your cooking supplies organized and tidy. Outdoor mess kit cooking is easy for anyone and no special skills are needed. Maybe just the ability to start a nice fire!
Expert Advice: "Aluminium kit is good for many reasons, pretty hard wearing in all temperatures i.e. doesn't get brittle in extreme cold and no possibility of extreme heat deformation. You can cook directly with it, and even when dented, because of the soft nature of the metal it's easy to reshape."
